FleetCommander Helps Recovery After Katrina

The value of FleetCommander’s web-based architecture was demonstrated first hand following the devastating Hurricane Katrina in the New Orleans area. When all around them was lost or unavailable, one FleetCommander fleet manager was able to rapidly pull the fleet back together. Using a web browser, the fleet manager for a large commercial fleet was able to go on-line and access the remotely hosted FleetCommander application.

In the midst of all of the human suffering that most of us witnessed on television were dedicated fleet managers just trying to perform the basic fleet operations. Imagine if you showed up to work in your fleet dispatch location and paperwork was missing, damaged, or destroyed. What would happen if you lost all billing data? How would you find your vehicles? Who had them last? In a time when returning a vehicle to the fleet is not the top priority, questions like these need to be answered. But how? FleetCommander is one answer.

The reality facing the fleet manager was that the parking lot was near empty and he needed to know where his fleet was. Some cars had been stolen in the chaos. But many were legitimately checked out from the motor pool and had not yet been returned. FleetCommander’s Dashboard showed, at a glance, which vehicles were late returning to the fleet. A click of the mouse provided a list, with contact information, of those vehicles that were past due returning to the fleet. A report showed the complete list of inventory that was supposed to be present but was not in the lot.

What made it all possible? This particular customer purchased FleetCommander for its enterprise. Their primary hosting facility is in California. The have approximately a dozen different sites. So, when the wind was blowing and water was rising in New Orleans, the FleetCommander server was safe and dry.
